It’s not often that Catherine and I get an overnight away from the kids. Don’t get me wrong. We love hanging out with the kidos but we do enjoy the times when it’s just us. When the opportunity arose we decided to go to Asheville for the night. We left about midday & headed up – it only takes us about 45 minutes to get there. We checked in and immediately grabbed a hotel shuttle to Wicked Weed Brewing. We’ve wanted to go there for quite some time so we were hoping we wouldn’t be disappointed. And we surely were not. It had an upstairs area and downstairs bar with an outdoor patio. We chose downstairs and sat under the heaters on the patio. It was a chilly November afternoon. We really enjoyed their Také Také Saison, Tyranny Hoppy Red, East Side (Or Die) IPA, and last but not least Freak of Nature Double IPA. We went late afternoon and it was already busy on a Friday night. We wouldn’t hesitate to bring our kids here during the early part of the day to eat & sit outside.
After we left Wicked Weed we grabbed a cab to Burial Beer Company. We walked in and liked the feel of this place immediately. By this time it was dark and the brewery was starting to get pretty busy. After ordering a flight we sat down at a side bar and looked up and couldn’t help but notice a portrait of Tom Selleck on the wall. A signature of sorts for this brewery. We checked out the brewery and enjoyed their beers. Catherine especially liked the Saw Blade Export Stout. We finished up and headed out.
It was time to eat. We had decided on Tupelo Honey. Catherine had been there before and really liked it and a friend of ours that lives in Asheville informed us that they had fabulous wings. He was right! They were great & the southern popcorn, which is perfectly fried okra was off the hook! We had to wait a little while for a table on a busy Friday night but it was well worth it.
Before heading back to our hotel we went to One World Brewing for a final beer. You would never know that this place was here based on the location. You had to go downstairs, almost if you were entering an establishment during prohibition. We sat at the bar and ordered a flight of their beers along with some guest beers on tap. We had a really good time. This was a really neat place and we would definitely go back.
We had started early so by 9:30 – 10 we were ready to go back to our hotel. And we were lucky enough to be early enough to still catch the free shuttle from our hotel. Plus the chick driving the shuttle was super entertaining! Gotta love a shuttle driving comedian…especially after a really fun night out in Asheville!
On the way out the next morning we stopped at a couple of our favorite bottle shops, Bruisin’ Ales and Appalachian Vintner. Both have a great selection to choose from. Appalachian Vintner is a bigger store because it offers a lot more than craft beer. Bruisin’ Ales is smaller but all they do is beer. They both have a growler station so don’t forget to bring the growler & get a fill. You won’t be disappointed by either. Lots of great beers to browse and you’ll certainly find something to suit your taste.
There are so many great breweries in Asheville but we only had time to sample a few. We thoroughly enjoyed the ones we did visit and can’t wait to plan another Asheville get away in the near future. Asheville is truly the beer capitol of the South.
Cheers!
Jason
