This past weekend was the second annual Hub City Brew Fest in beautiful Downtown Spartanburg, SC. The sky was cloudy with a high around 70. You couldn’t have asked for better weather for the event. This year brought more than twenty breweries from across the Carolinas. It was a well planned beer festival for people of all ages to enjoy.
We got there shortly after opening and proceeded down the line to start. As always, I start with the beers I have not had before. If I have time (and room) I will get to the rest. The beers that were poured were tasty. It is always difficult to narrow the field of winners for me personally but I think this years winners for me were Thomas Creek Expresso Oatmeal Stout, Palmetto Marty The Marzen, Carolina Bauerhaus Whiskey Sour, and Foothills Azacca Golden Ale. After trying all the new beers we headed for the exit. As we neared the front, there sat the Oskar Blues tent. I couldn’t resist stopping in and getting a Ten Fidy Imperial Stout and a Death By Coconut Porter. And as luck would have it the next tent was Sierra Nevada. Of course I had to get a Narwahl Imperial Stout.
We left and decided to go to Hub City Tap House which is home to Ciclops Cyderi and Brewery. We hoped they would have been at the festival but since South Carolina’s beer laws are antiquated they were unable to participate because they do not distribute. I had a flight of their beers and really enjoyed the Equatorial Blah Pale Ale, Eie P Apple: Mosiac Hopped Cider and the Boniato: White Sweet Potato Beer. Hands down the best pumpkin/yam beer I’ve ever had.
We cannot wait until next October to see what the organizers give us. I have no doubt it will be outstanding. Until next time.
Cheers!
Jason
