Jackson, Mississippi. Its’s been awhile since I’ve been to Mississippi and it was a nice time to visit with the boom of craft beer in the South. One doesn’t think of Mississippi as a mecca of craft beer so I had to do a little digging after getting into town to try to find local craft beer. With the help of Guy, we headed to Hops & Habanas. This place is hidden in a shopping plaza in the Fondren area of Jackson. Don’t let the outside appearance fool you. This place is not only a bottle shop, it has a bar area that sells growler fills and flights! Although not for me, it has quite a selection of cigars as well. The outside area has seating and games but with the weather like it was that wasn’t going to happen.
Guy and I ordered a flight and watched Mississippi State play in their bowl game on the TV. I really enjoyed Natchez Brewing’s Cronyism with Blackberry American Wild Ale and Tin Roof’s Parade Ground Porter. After the flight it was time to shop for beer. I was impressed with the mix and match selections of several local and regional southern breweries. I picked out 15 beers for me take back home. I could have spent more but I wanted to check out another bottle shop before we had to leave.
We then headed to LD’s Beer Run. It is located in the northern section of the city. They don’t do flights but you can grab a growler to go. I picked up a mix and match six pack and headed back to the house. We wanted to try Lucky Town Brewing but we ran out of time because of dinner plans at 6.
Dinner happened to be at the famous Doe’s Eat Place. This was the first time Catherine and the kids and I had been there but Guy had been before. I had heard of this restaurant before on TV and was stoked to go eat there. Guy and Catherine enjoyed their 2 to 3 pound steak (yes that is how big they were) and I enjoyed tamales. I love tamales and these were top notch. They were perfect with Natchez Brewing’s Old Capital IPA. That was two beers that I really liked from this brewery. Good thing I picked up some bottles to bring home with me.
The return to Mississippi was an enjoyable one. I hope this helps people who visit or just driving thru and need a break from the road. I know I look forward to a return visit. Until next time.
Cheers!
Jason
